Hyperoxygenated Corn Oil (HCO) is a medical-grade or pharmaceutical-technical version of corn oil that has been chemically modified to contain extra oxygenated functional groups, such as hydroperoxides, epoxides, aldehydes, and hydroxyls. These groups are introduced using controlled oxidation or oxygen plasma treatments, transforming the oil into a highly reactive and bio-functional lipid.
Originally developed for use in topical wound care and tissue regeneration, HCO has antimicrobial, pro-healing, and vasodilating properties, making it valuable in burn treatments, surgical healing ointments, and diabetic foot ulcer therapies. When applied topically, the oxidized lipids help generate controlled oxidative stress, which stimulates tissue repair and kills pathogens.
Pharmaceutical companies formulate HCO into ointments, creams, or impregnated wound dressings, especially for chronic, non-healing wounds. It’s also being investigated for use in dermatology and oncology, where localized oxidative action can destroy abnormal cells or reduce inflammation.

Outside the medical field, HCO is also tested in plant disease control, where its oxidative byproducts serve as antifungal agents in horticulture.
Due to its instability and high reactivity, HCO must be stored in dark, oxygen-controlled environments and used within short windows. It is not safe for consumption but represents a powerful new frontier in bioactive lipid applications.
