Description
Corn bran oil is extracted from the outer layer of the corn kernel—known as the bran—which is removed during dry milling or degerming processes. This outer hull is rich in dietary fiber, bound phytochemicals, and residual oils. While the bran itself is commonly used as livestock feed or a fiber supplement, emerging technologies like enzymatic hydrolysis, ultrasound-assisted extraction, and supercritical CO₂ methods have made it possible to isolate its lipid fraction. Corn bran oil is thick, amber-colored, and aromatic, carrying a higher amount of free fatty acids, tocotrienols, ferulic acid esters, and non-glyceride compounds compared to refined corn oil. This makes it unsuitable for high-heat cooking, but highly valuable in nutraceutical, cosmetic, and antioxidant-rich food applications. Its high phenolic content makes it a potent scavenger of free radicals, lending anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, and anti-microbial benefits. In skincare, it is used in exfoliating serums, face masks, and lipid-replenishing night creams. It’s also being studied as a functional ingredient in wholegrain bread and protein bars to deliver additional antioxidants and lipids. Corn bran oil is being explored in sports nutrition for delayed-release energy supplements, due to its slow-digesting lipid and fiber interactions. In pharmaceuticals, bran-derived oils are being looked at for lipid encapsulation of sensitive drugs. On the industrial side, it may be added to eco-friendly paint formulations, polymer blends, or even natural wood preservatives due to its hydrophobic and oxidative stability properties. Because extraction from corn bran is expensive and requires advanced technology, this oil is primarily produced in pilot-scale labs, research centers, and by some bioinnovation startups. If made solvent-free, it fits clean-label and vegan product trends. As demand grows for non-traditional plant oils that offer multifunctional benefits, corn bran oil is rising as a high-potential, low-waste derivative of corn processing.
