Description

Hydrotreated Corn Oil (HCO) is a highly processed form of corn oil used primarily as a feedstock for renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). It is produced by treating corn oil—often from industrial or inedible grades like Distillers Corn Oil—with hydrogen gas at high temperatures and pressures in the presence of a metal catalyst, such as nickel or platinum. This process, known as hydrotreating or hydroprocessing, removes oxygen atoms from the fatty acids in the oil and saturates the carbon chains, converting them into hydrocarbons similar in structure to those found in petroleum diesel. The resulting fuel is drop-in compatible, meaning it can be used in existing diesel engines or jet turbines without modification. Hydrotreated corn oil contains no sulfur, no aromatics, and no oxygen, resulting in cleaner combustion, lower emissions of particulate matter, and better engine performance.

Unlike traditional biodiesel, which still contains oxygen and can face stability issues, HCO-derived fuels are chemically identical to petroleum diesel but with a significantly lower carbon footprint. This makes it a preferred choice for governments, airlines, and logistics companies seeking to meet carbon reduction targets under global climate agreements. The feedstock flexibility of the hydrotreating process means that corn oil can be blended with other fats and oils (such as tallow, canola, or used cooking oil) to optimize yield and performance. The process also allows for the production of renewable naphtha, propane, and jet fuel from the same feedstock. While not edible and not found in retail stores, hydrotreated corn oil represents a major shift in how corn byproducts are used for green energy transformation. It is typically handled at large refineries or integrated biofuel facilities and must meet ASTM D975 or D7566 standards for diesel and jet fuel respectively.

HCO also plays a key role in the growing hydrogen economy, where renewable hydrogen used in hydroprocessing can be paired with HCO to create entirely fossil-free fuel. Its production supports rural economies, increases energy security, and closes the loop on agricultural carbon cycles. In the near future, with growing carbon taxes and aviation fuel regulations, hydrotreated corn oil may become a key raw material in achieving net-zero emissions in long-distance transport and air travel.
